lever action rifle vs pump action 12 gauge for home defense?
The possible home defense guns I have are a mossberg 835 turkey gun with tru glow sites and a 24 inch barrel and a marlin 30-30 with a scope and 1 inch elevated Scope Mounts. I am looking into getting a marlin 44 mag carbine for home security. Is there any advantage over the 30-30 besides capacity and size. Is a shotgun with buckshot better than a lever action rifle period. Should I buy a shotgun with a 8 or 9 shots instead of the 6 shots I have? After seeing what these guns do to deer I know a com hit with any of them will stop a thug or thugs. If I decide on the shotgun which load is better 00 buckshot or # 4 buckshot. Is a ar-15 better than everything I listed Thanks for any input.
Q. lever action rifle vs pump action 12 gauge for home defense?
A. This is just me but of the two guns you mentioned, I think I'd go with the shotgun since its going to be easier to use effectively when you're under a lot of pressure. Not to mention that most scopes don't work so good under extremely low-light conditions, like say a house with all the lights out in the middle of the night.
Q. Is there any advantage over the 30-30 besides capacity and size. Is a shotgun with buckshot better than a lever action rifle period.
A. Not really. At least not inside a house. If you were defending your home from say a bunch of rioters or looters and would be shooting at 50-100 yards, I'd say the .30/30 would have an advantage, but inside the house the advantages switch to the shotgun.
One thing to consider if you're planning on using a gun for home defense is over-penetration. While you want something that will stop an attacker, you also don't want to shoot through interior and exterior walls if you can help it since that means you have to worry about who else would be hit (a family member in the next room, a neighbor next door...) A .30/30 round is going to be a hell of a lot more likely to shoot through walls than a 12 gauge shotgun using buckshot or birdshot. So on that basis, plus the fact that a rifle requires precise aiming while a shotgun is a point and shoot weapon, the shotgun makes more sense than the rifle.
Q. If I decide on the shotgun which load is better 00 buckshot or # 4 buckshot.
A. Personal preference. Both will work fine, so it comes down to what you prefer.
Q. Is a ar-15 better than everything I listed?
A. Not really. Again a rifle has over-penetration issues inside a house. And the .223 round is actually less powerful than the .30/30 round. About the only advantage to the AR15 is that it has a 30 round magazine and reloading is faster so if you were facing a bunch of rioters/looters and wanted to keep them at a distance, it would let you shoot more rounds without reloading.
