How does a Red Dot sight work?

Well, it's a little complicated, but it's due to the way that optics work. Underneath the sight window is a little red LED shining upwards. When you look through the sight, it just looks like a plain glass window, but there are actually several prism layers sandwiched in there, and one layer has a coating that reflects LED light but allows other light to pass through (so it's like a one-way mirror for red). By making the inner surfaces of the sight into lenses sandwiched together, but the outer surfaces of the sandwich parallel, there is no overall magnification of the light going through the sight, but the image of the LED appears, not in the window, but projected several yards in front of the sight.
If the gun is way off target, the red dot will not be visible, because it is "projected" onto the image of the target (there is no light sent to the target, it's all in the optics picture - just like a telescope makes a picture seem closer, the red dot seems farther out). When you can see the red dot, move the gun until it's over the target, and you're ready to fill 'em up (with lead). You don't even have to center the red dot within the window - the red dot is projected ahead (maybe 25M in front of the gun), so if the red dot is on your target, the gun is sighted in.
You usually use this sight by keeping both eyes open, and have one eye look through the sight and the other around it. Your brain processes the image from both eyes, so you appear to have a 3D view of the target with the red dot in front of both eyes (it may take some practice to get your mind to process this correctly).
